Portsmouth's second-half push can't deliver Charlton Athletic win

Pompey’s second-half charge couldn’t return three points as it finished 0-0 at Charlton.

The Blues pushed after the break but couldn’t make more of their openings, in what proved a lively affair for a goalless encounter.

The home side had the clearer of the first-half chances at The Valley, with John Mousinho’s side not being able to fashion more from positions of threat.

The sights of goal were more tangible after the break, however, with Abu Kamara, Adrian Segecic and Colby Bishop not being able to get the deciding goal.

The applause from the 3,052 travelling fans on the final whistle told of what they thought of their team’s much-improved display on the final whistle.

Miles Leaburn fashioned the first opening in the 16th minute, but Daniel Bielica was equal to his low, angled drive.

A big chance then ensued with Adrian Segecic dummying Marlon Pack’s pass and Tyrese Shade clear, but his touch was loose and Charlton cleared.

Segecic, Rocco Shein and Terry Devlin then combined but the right-back’s cross was cut out at the near post with Colby Bishop there for a tap-in.

Conor Shaughnessy came to the rescue in the 20th minute clearing Tyler Bindon’s header from virtually the goal line.

Shein then didn’t give a call as he attacked Abu Kamara’s cross after a driving run, with Bishop intervening from an inferior position and the home side clearing.

Bielica then pushed away Karlan Grant’s fierce drive in the 33rd minute before former Blues loanee Milli Alli somehow blazed over from a few yards with the goal gaping.

Shaughnessy’s header was claimed by Arhur Okonkwo, after a long Tyrese Shade throw at the end of the half.

Pompey had a big chance 18 seconds after the restart, when the lively Kamara drove forward and saw his 20 yarder just about kept out by Okonkwo.

There was little in the way of clear openings until Shein’s angled 20 yarder was deflected over in the 64th minute.

Pompey then gained a foothold with extended spells of possession, as they looked to find spaces in threatening areas.

Segecic then broke clear but dallied over getting his shot away, allowing Oliver Skipp to get a saving tackle in.

He then spurned a huge opening as Adams found Kamara with a lovely through ball and the cross found last season’s top scorer, but he fired tamely at Okonkwo.

Bishop couldn’t find the final touch at the back post from a dangerous Kavuma-McQueen cross shot.

Charlton rallied late on, but Pompey’s impressive back line stood firm as they saw out their clean sheet.
