Touted Portsmouth target moves to Championship strugglers amid Middlesbrough and Wrexham talk over former Leeds United man

He was linked with Pompey with a space open in John Mousinho’s squad, but the striker has now joined a fellow Championship struggler.

Patrick Bamford has agreed a move to fellow Championship strugglers Sheffield United.

The striker, who was touted for a move to Fratton Park last month, has agreed a short-term deal until January with the Blades.

Former England striker linked with Fratton move becomes a Blade

There was a flurry of speculation a Fratton move was in the offing for the 32-year-old, who has been looking for a club since leaving Leeds United in the summer.

The News reported that talk was wide of the mark, however, with boss John Mousinho later going on to shoot down the prospect of the one-cap England international arriving at PO4.

Wilder has quickly moved to bring the out-of-contract front man in at Bramall Lane, however, after returning to his old club as boss in September after Ruben Selles’ sacking.

Bamford has recently been training with top-of-the-table Coventry City and been linked with a host of clubs at home and abroad in recent months.

Coventry boss Frank Lampard explained then Bamford was with his side to build his fitness over a deal being in the offing.

He said: ‘Yeah, I guess you could call it doing him a favour. I know Patrick well and he hasn’t got a club. He’s training with us. I’m very happy, he’s a good lad, Patrick. He’s very easy.

‘I know the conclusions everyone’s going to get to but he’s just training with us.’

Pompey have space in squad for new recruit

There was strong talk of a move to La Liga outfit Getafe with MLS interest also mentioned. In terms of the Championship, Pompey’s rivals Middlesbrough and Wrexham were among those said to be trailing the former Crystal Palace man.

A move for Bamford would’ve been possible for the Blues, with there a space being kept open in Mousinho’s squad which was registered with the EFL after the summer transfer window’s closure.

The focus for that berth has shifted to the left-back department, however, in the wake of Connor Ogilvie being sidelined with a knee injury for up to 12 weeks. Pompey’s other specialist left-back, Jacob Farrell, is also out with an ongoing groin injury.
