Key Portsmouth man set to miss crucial Swansea City showdown despite Charlton Athletic absence

Andre Dozzell has featured 18 times for Pompey this season.

Pompey are set to be without Andre Dozzell for Tuesday’s crucial trip to relegation rivals Swansea City.

The 26-year-old was sidelined as he served a one-game ban, having picked up five yellow cards in the opening 18 games of the season

The contest at The Valley was initially halted after a medical emergency in the crowd, with referee Matthew Donohue taking the players off the pitch.

Nearly an hour after the incident occurred, the fixture was subsequently abandoned after 12 minutes, with Charlton later confirming the tragic passing of the supporter. This will mean the fixture will now be replayed in full at a later date, with Saturday’s meeting now nullified.

Addicks defender Lloyd Jones was shown a yellow card by referee Donohue with just four minutes on the clock but his booking will remain against his name with disciplinary matters still counting despite the match being void.

Similarly, Ipswich Town’s Jacob Greaves was sent off during September’s abandoned fixture against Blackburn Rovers, but was still forced to serve his suspension against Pompey the following week.

Andre Dozzell’s ban - and why Pompey man will miss Swansea

The same can’t be said for Dozzell, who missed Saturday’s trip to the capital with a ban.

With the fixture against Charlton now written off, the 26-year-old will instead miss the midweek contest against Swansea in order to serve his one-game suspension.

FA rules state: ‘Games abandoned, cancelled, postponed or re-arranged do not count towards a match suspension. The game must be completed with a result. If a game does get abandoned, cancelled, postponed or re-arranged then this will not count towards suspensions and an alternative match will need to be added.’

Dozzell has been an ever-present figure in John Mousinho’s side this term, starting all 18 matches so far and has been one of the shining lights in a tough start to the campaign on the south coast.

Pompey’s yellow cards and players currently on tightropes

The ex-QPR man isn’t the first member of Mousinho’s squad to have been a given one-match ban due to yellow cards this season, with John Swift forced to miss the 1-0 defeat to Stoke City in October.

Meanwhile, Terry Devlin will return to action having served his red-card suspension against Bristol City last week.

A number of Pompey players are walking on suspension tightropes heading into next week’s cut off point, with Marlon Pack and Regan Poole currently sitting on four bookings.

Josh Murphy and Zak Swanson have three yellow cards, while Colby Bishop, Connor Ogilvie, Luke Le Roux, Jordan Willians and Minhyeok Yang have two.

Adrian Segecic, Mark Kosznovszky, Devlin, Josef Bursik and Makenzie Kirk have only been cautioned once this term.
