Portsmouth boss details Adrian Segecic’s response after facing Hull City criticism

John Mousinho aired frustration over Adrian Segecic’s costly Hull City mistake and the areas where Pompey came up short last weekend. The Blues boss updates on the Aussie attacker this evening.

John Mousinho believes Adrian Segecic has put his Hull City pain behind him after finding himself the subject of his criticism.

And the Blues boss stressed the need for collective responsibility, after airing his frustration over the Australian’s costly double gaffe and his side’s shortcomings in the 1-0 Fratton Park defeat last weekend.

Mousinho on Segecic gaffe: ‘He’s got over it’

Mousinho branded the faults which led to Pompey coming away empty-handed despite their dominance against the Tigers ‘unacceptable’.

Meanwhile, the head coach stated he was ‘not having’ the sloppy clearance from the Aussie, before he played keeper Nico Schmid short with a backpass for Matt Crook’s second-half winner.

The Pompey boss feels those individual mistakes can now be put to bed, however, with a result at Blackburn the focus.

Asked over Segecic’s response this week, Mousinho told Express FM’s David Howes: ‘He’s fine. He’s got over it and he’ll move on really quickly - that’s the only way you can be as a professional footballer.’

Mousinho reiterated his belief that Segecic shouldn’t squarely shoulder the blame for what happened, as Pompey failed to deliver a Hull return from 22 shots on goal.

And when it comes to the game’s decisive moment in the 73rd minute, it wasn’t just the Blues’ top scorer under the microscope for mistakes.

Pompey boss: ‘There’s collective responsibility we need to take’

Speaking on BBC Sounds, Mousinho added: ‘If you look at the goal, and Segs will obviously hold his hand up for the goal.

‘He gets punished because we don’t bail him out on a couple of occasions.

‘There was times in the game when we gave the ball away in poor areas doing poor things, but didn’t get punished.

‘The thing for me is not trying to single Segs out, but they had two shots. The first was from us giving the ball away in the middle of the park after 30 seconds, the second came from us giving the ball away in circumstances where we don’t need to.

‘There was other times when we were sloppy on the ball, but didn’t get punished by the ball ending up in the back of the net.

‘Segs will be fine. He made the mistake, but there’s collective responsibility we need to take for that goal.

‘First of all we take the free-kick with Ebou on the ground. If we wait and Ebou is up and in his proper position, there’s no way Crooks has that time and space in the box.

‘We then switch off, because we think Segs is going to deal with it. Again we allow Hull too much space on the edge of the box, so there’s two, three and four mistakes in the lead up to the goal where we can do better.’
