Former Portsmouth and Ipswich Town favourite braced for Brighton exit after injury woe

Fratton Park academy graduate Adam Webster will reportedly be on the move this summer.

Former Pompey defender Adam Webster will reportedly become a free agent this summer.

It’s been a hugely-disappointing campaign for the Fratton Park academy graduate, who failed to register a single competitive minute for Fabian Hurzeler’s side.

The 31-year-old sustained a significant knee injury during a pre-season training camp in July 2025, subsequently ruling him out for the entirety of the Seagulls’ Premier League season.

Webster is expected to depart Brighton this summer, however, with his contract set to conclude following the campaign’s climax.

Former Pompey defender set for Brighton exit

The Athletic have reported Albion will not renew the central defender’s deal, which will bring the curtain down on a successful seven-year stay with the top-flight side.

The report suggests Hurzeler’s backline will undergo a transformation in the forthcoming transfer window, with the likes of Igor Julio and in-demand Jan Paul van Hecke both touted with departures.

News of Webster’s potential exit comes after Brighton secured European football for the second time in dramatic style on the final day.

Despite a 3-0 loss to Manchester United, the Seagulls claimed an eighth-placed finish, earning them a spot in the Europa Conference League for next term.

The former Pompey and Ipswich Town man will reportedly become a free agent this summer, having registered 158 appearances in all competitions.

Webster completed a £20m switch from Bristol City in 2019 and established himself as a frontline operator in Albion’s Premier League rise.

And injury issues continued to affect the defender throughout his time at the Amex, with the serious knee problem forcing him to sit out his final campaign with Hurzeler’s side.

Webster, of course, rose through the ranks at Fratton Park, making his first-team debut aged 17 in January 2012.

The defender went on to total 81 outings in all competitions for the Blues before his £750,000 switch to Ipswich Town in 2016.

Spells at Portman Road and Bristol City followed for the West Wittering-born talent prior to his £20m Brighton move in 2019.

Pompey’s centre-back options

Mousinho currently has six first-team operators in his pool of central defenders, but that is expected to shift this summer.

Regan Poole remained an ever-present for Pompey last term, while Conor Shaughnessy’s minutes were managed due to respective injury issues.

Madiodio Dia arrived from Norwegian outfit Haugesund on deadline day in the January window, joining Josh Knight, Hayden Matthews and Ibane Bowat in the Blues’ ranks.
