Rookie Portsmouth boss John Mousinho has impressively come of age - now beware of Bristol City and summer suitors

The Blues’ head coach has led calls for greater investment by Tornante amid being linked with the Ashton Gate job

The rookie is coming of age, the boy has become a man. For John Mousinho, life really is beginning at 40.

He has flourished at Fratton Park, learning to walk as head coach with impressive ease, while blossoming into a rising managerial talent who, inevitably, will attract admirers this summer. Bristol City certainly need to be monitored with a wary eye.

Undoubtedly, Mousinho has established himself as one of the Blues’ most popular bosses in living memory. Let’s not forget, some fans have never forgiven Harry Redknapp following his St Mary’s indiscretion.

Winning matches helps, of course. Certainly overseeing Pompey’s long-awaited return to the Championship after so many predecessors had either failed or given up warrants eternal respect among the Fratton faithful.

However, having overachieved yet again by masterminding the Blues’ march to safety with two matches remaining for a second successive season, there has been a marked change in Mousinho, coinciding with his 40th birthday this week.

Bullish after masterminding survival

From the moment he appeared on BBC Radio Solent’s breakfast show with Rick Jackson, hours after survival was secured amid a Coventry hammering, Pompey’s head coach has spearheaded the charge to persuade Michael Eisner to demonstrate more ambition.

Currently occupying a position of immense strength, Mousinho has capitalised on his lofty standing to bullishly lead calls for increased investment from Tornante, who have put £54m into the club since August 2017.

Heaping pressure on your employers in the public glare is a potential powder keg of a situation, yet he has handled it impeccably so far, a masterclass in diplomacy.

Demonstrating usual eloquence and a talent for reasoned communication, a canny Mousinho has been non-confrontational, although gently forceful, in getting his message across through the media. Nobody can accuse him of loyally toeing the line.

‘It is let’s have a sit down, let’s talk about a strategy within the football club, let’s talk about ambition, let’s talk about where we want to get to.’

Certainly an entire fanbase will be flanking Mousinho while entering scheduled meetings with the visiting Eric Eisner ahead of Saturday’s Championship finale, with Tornante’s vision top of the agenda.

Although a standard, end-of-season procedure, on this occasion they represent pivotal moments in terms of Pompey’s direction and also the future of their head coach, who recently admitted he has two years left on the deal he signed in September 2024.

Stock is high after three-and-a-half years at Fratton Park

Unquestionably, Mousinho isn’t coming across as somebody eager to leave Fratton Park this summer. Had he been intent on departing, strongly lobbying the owners to ramp up their Blues ambition would represent a crushing waste of effort for somebody unable to reap the rewards if successful.

Nonetheless, his stock is high at present, while three-and-a-half years at one club represents almost a lifetime in modern football management. There is a real danger he may be attracted to a fresh challenge, while securing a welcome escape from the grind of consecutive relegation battles.

Bristol City have shown interest twice before, with technical director Brian Tinnion championing pursuit of Mousinho on both occasions, only to be left disappointed.

Intriguingly, with former Arsenal technical director James Ellis expected to be appointed imminently, and Charlie Boss’ arrival as chief executive in February, the Robins could well look elsewhere this time around.

Still, following James Morrison being handed the West Brom head coach role on a permanent basis on Thursday, there are currently very few realistic vacancies for Mousinho to be considered for.

Unless the opportunity to mastermind Leicester City’s resurrection from League One appeals, although it’s a club embroiled in financial danger and a thankless task for anyone who dares grasp the challenge.

Returning to facts rather than dwelling on fantasy, Mousinho will soon discover whether he will be backed financially, a potential pathway which could convince him to remain on his Fratton Park journey of self-discovery.

Yet the nagging feeling is this could well be a long summer for Pompey fans as they nervously eye Bristol City’s intentions - and hope their maturing head coach doesn’t decide now is time to leave home.
