Popular Portsmouth title winner and ex-Wales international embarks on new career after injury heartbreak
The energetic midfielder made 105 appearances for the Blues before leaving in the summer of 2024
A Pompey League One title winner has taken his first steps into a coaching career.
Joe Morrell has returned to former club Bristol City after accepting a permanent role with their under-21s side.

It is understood the ex-Wales international had previously been sounded out by Pompey as a potential replacement for Zesh Rehman as first-team development coach.
That would have marked a swift return to the club where he featured 105 times and scored once before a knee injury prematurely curtailed his playing career.
However, Morrell has instead linked up with the Robins as their under-21s coach, taking up the position in January.
Forced to retire in October 2025
The 29-year-old, who possesses a Uefa A Licence, was forced to follow a planned pathway into coaching earlier than anticipated, having announced his retirement in October.
He was unable to recover from the knee injury sustained on Pompey duty at Oxford United in January 2024 during their charge to the League One title.

That ended Morrell’s 2023-24 season after 31 appearances, having been a first-team regular and also captained John Mousinho’s side on occasions when Marlon Pack was absent.
The midfielder was subsequently released at the season’s end when his contract expired, although remained at Fratton Park to complete his lengthy rehabilitation following surgery on his left knee.
The former Luton man, who featured 37 times for Wales, trialled with Reading and Plymouth last summer during the search for a new club.
However, at the age of 28, he sadly called time on his football career in October - and turned his attention to coaching.
A ‘massive influence’ at Fratton Park
Mousinho, who has often talked glowingly about Morrell’s professionalism and being a ‘massive influence’ around the club, later sought to bring him into his coaching set-up.
Following Rehman’s departure for a coaching role in Saudi Arabia in December, the Welshman was identified as a candidate to take over as first-team development coach.
Instead, Morrell has returned to Ashton Gate, the club where he started his career, making six first-team appearances before leaving for Luton in October 2020.
Danny Cowley then brought him to Fratton Park in August 2021 for an undisclosed fee, beating Ipswich to the energetic midfielder’s signature.
While at Pompey, Morrell featured for Wales in the 2022 World Cup finals in Qatar, making two appearances in the tournament, including as a substitute against England.
His three-year Blues deal expired in the summer of 2024 and he was released along with fellow League One champions Sean Raggett and Joe Rafferty.
Now he has embarked on a coaching career, with Bristol City, fittingly, handing a first opportunity.
