'Won't lose any sleep. Big future. A luxury player' - how Portsmouth fans have reacted to reported Spurs decision and Minhyeok Yang move to Coventry
Pompey’s January transfer window appears to be up and running - but it’s an exit rather than an incoming that has the Blues out of the blocks.
Pompey fans on social media have been reacting to reports that Spurs have recalled Blues loanee Minhyeok Yang in order to facilitate a loan move to Championship leaders Coventry City.
Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano broke the news at lunchtime on Tuesday, meaning the South Korea international’s last moment in a Pompey shirt was his 90+8th minute winner against Charlton on December 29.
That dramatic goal was one of three the 19-year-old forward scored for the Blues in his 17 appearances for the club, with Yang also scoring the winning goal against Middlebrough back in October.
However, apart from a seven-match run of starts between the end of September and the beginning of November, the loanee often struggled for game time. Indeed, only two more starts followed defeat to Birmingham on November 1. Meanwhile, Yang didn’t even feature against Bristol City on New Year’s Day, despite his heroics against Charlton following his introduction as a 64th-minute substitute.
According to some members of the Fratton faithful, head coach John Mousinho was unable to get the best out of the Tottenham winger. Others, however, believe he only showed glimpses of what he could do, while there’s an argument he was a luxury Pompey could ill-afford to have for their battle against the drop.
Here’s a selection of those supporters’ views that have appeared on X as Pompey fans get their heads around a Fratton Park exit that no-one really saw coming.
The News has contacted Pompey for confirmation.
Pompey fans react to Minhyeok Yang developments
@Samalaaarr: Sure there is a player in Yang but apart from a couple of good moments he hasn’t really had an impact. Can’t say I’m too concerned about him leaving.
@JSweetman92: Won't lose any sleep on this. Probably is a player there, and scored some big goals, but he'd end up in the South stand if we had a gust of wind across the pitch and can go missing quite a bit. Best of luck to the kid. Might thrive in a team that dominates the ball .
@higgins97103: He will thrive with decent players around him. Best of luck and wishes. Big future ahead.
@BenjoPompey: Good move for the kid. Not a player for battles. A player for a team on the front foot and attacking. Lightweight so a luxury for a team battling to stay up with a budget off the Lidl reduced aisle, will fly at Coventry.
@jason_b0te70376: Well, we will see how he performs over the second half of the season at Coventry and that will give SOME indication to JM’s skill set and weather he actually has what it takes to manage at this level in terms of tactics, vision and getting the best out of players.
@ArtistNdl: Certainly won't see more minutes at Coventry. But he'll be in a much more competitive environment. We move on.
@StueyW1986: Out of all the loan players, he was probably our best one albeit not a high bar with our loans. Hopefully few more go and we get a load in.
@statmanana: Talented but still too inexperienced to influence enough games. Probably best for all he moves on, esp as our coaching staff seem unable to bring the best out of young players not already at Champship level.
@Pompey_Goals: I must been watching a different player, glad he’s not with us anymore, but Coventry!!
@POMP_jack: Honestly not that bothered. Good finisher and very quick on the ball just needs a bit of strength and could go far.
@Disclosed717: At his current level he's a luxury player Pompey can ill afford. Coventry can use him as an impact player, they have better players to support him.
@Nealnil1962: That is what happens when you keep leaving them on bench, he carried a bigger threat than Blair!
@brumborn: Spurs not happy with the game time he is getting at Pompey? Ironically, his 3 goals put him in 2nd spot in Pompey’s strikers. Although that particular bar is hardly off the ground!
@StassSportsNews: Well done Mous, that’s what you get not playing him when you should be.
