Minyheok Yang: Portsmouth exit confirmed as Blues' January transfer window rebuild begins

Minyheok Yang’s Pompey stay is over

Minyheok Yang’s Pompey departure has been confirmed.

The South Korea international has left Fratton Park after spending the first half of the 2025-26 season on loan from Premier League Spurs.

He will now join Championship leaders Coventry over the remainder of the campaign, with Tottenham boss Thomas Frank having immediately sanctioned another temporary move away for the promising former Gangwon winger.

Yang made 17 appearances for John Mousinho’s side following his August 8 switch to the south coast and scored three goals.

One of those was the winner against then league leaders Middlesbrough at PO4 at the beginning of October. His third and final goal also proved a match-winner, with the 19-year-old netting in the eighth minute of added time as Pompey clinched a last-gasp victory against Charlton in front of the Fratton End on December 29.

That proved to be Yang’s parting gift to the Blues, with the attacker an unused substitute in Pompey’s last game against Bristol City on New Year’s Day.

Confirming the player’s exit, Mousinho said: ‘We would like to thank Minhyeok for his contribution during the first half of the season.

‘He will always be fondly remembered here for that late winner against Charlton and I’m sure that he has a great future in the game.’

Yang exit marks start of Pompey’s January transfer window

The forward’s departure in the first week of the January transfer window will come as something of a surprise, with other members of the current Pompey first-team ranks seemingly ahead in the queue in terms of exits.

It also comes at a time when the Blues are struggling for numbers in attacking areas, with Josh Murphy, Callum Lang and Florian Bianchini all currently unavailable because of injury.

That leaves Mousinho with just the inexperienced trio of Adrian Segecic, Harvey Blair and Franco Umeh, plus the struggling for form Conor Chaplin and John Swift to call upon for those three attacking positions behind the central striker until the Blues’ injury worries lessen or reinforcements are added to the group.

Mousinho has already said he’d like up to six new arrivals this month.

Pompey’s next game is against Premier League leaders Arsenal in the third round of the FA Cup on Sunday, It is then followed by a trip to the Championship’s bottom side, Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday, January 17 - by which stage the Fratton Park hope to have welcomed some new signings through the door at Fratton Park.
