Gaffer For A Day: The dictionary definition of smash and grab now has Portsmouth's name after it
Gaffer For A Day, Paul Mellon, aged 53 from Hilsea, analyses Pompey’s 1-0 victory at Middlesbrough
So Paul, did you enjoy that?
Everyone is so chuffed for Conor Chaplin, including his team-mates, you could see how happy they were for him.
We all want Conor to succeed. It has been really hard for him, I don’t think playing him as a right winger earlier in the season has helped him or the team.

The number 10 has been a problem position, I don’t think anybody has grabbed it by the scruff of the neck this season. John Swift has had a couple of good games, Adrian Segecic has done well when he’s played there.
We’ve had injuries to John Murphy and then Callum Lang before he was sold. Colby Bishop has been so off form as well. If we’d had an on-form striker to play alongside Chaplin, we probably would have got more out of him.
When your strike partner is also having a bad season, that can’t help. So you've got to feel for the guy.
How did you assess the match?
It wasn’t the greatest game of all time, for once Middlesbrough did a proper Pompey, which was basically dominate the match, wasteful in front of goal and then conceding late.
Our defence did really well, held strong and Nico Schmid was what we were hoping for this season, pulling off a couple of brilliant saves.

‘It was a game between two out-of-form teams, Boro were so wasteful in the final third, combined with our strong defence. Yet the elation when Chaplin’s goal went in was something else.
If you look up ‘smash and grab’ in the dictionary, it will now have this game as its definition. If you’re only going to have one shot on target, make sure it’s the 97th minute and it goes in!
You mentioned Schmid, what do you make of his form?
His performances have been very indifferent this season. It’s the little things he does which annoys the crowd - which he does time and time again.
I always get into the ground early and you see the goalkeepers practicing their kicking, yet when it comes to the actual match, his kicking is not normally the best. A few times he holds onto the ball too long, but he’s a great shot stopper.
Over the last couple of weeks I’ve thought we should maybe give Josef Bursik a go, but fair play to Mousinho for sticking by his number one keeper.
Schmid had a brilliant season last year, he was dominating his area a lot more. I don’t think the injury against Southampton helped him, but, on his game, he is as good as any keeper in the league.
What do you make of the relegation battle now?
It’s still too close to call, Pompey could still need two wins to stay up. Especially as Oxford United won on Saturday and still have to play Sheffield Wednesday at home, so you would imagine that’s another victory for them.
Leicester City look doomed and hopefully we'll beat them in a couple of week’s time. If you can get that and try to pick up another win like Stoke or Birmingham, that may be enough. You never know, Coventry might already be up by the time we play them.
Oxford have picked up a bit of confidence and we seem to match each other's results. If that keeps happening, then it’s going into the last game and will be either them or us for relegation. I still think we’ll stay up, but it’s going to come down to the line.
