Evergreen Portsmouth title winner still banging in goals after joining 15th club of career

The striker totalled six goals in 23 matches during an injury-ravaged 18 months at Fratton Park

A former Pompey League Two title winner has moved to the 15th club of his career - and crowned his debut with a goal.

The much-travelled Curtis Main has turned out in eight different leagues during playing days which show no sign of easing up, with stints in England, Scotland and India.

Now aged 34, the striker last week joined Brechin City in Lowland League East on a short-term deal, having been without a club since leaving Dundee at the end of last season.

Sure enough Main, who was part of Paul Cook’s 2016-17 champions, was thrown straight in for his debut on Saturday against Dunipace.

He marked the occasion by scoring a second-half penalty in their 3-0 success at the Carnegie Fuels Stadium at Glebe Park, lifting them into third place.

Brechin are managed by Andy Kirk, the father of Pompey striker Makenzie, who is currently out on loan with Barnsley.

And he believes Main, who has also represented Motherwell, Aberdeen, St Mirren, Dundee, Ayr and Greenock Morton in the Scottish game, will improve with regular football.

‘He’s a fit boy, he’s a strong boy’

Kirk told Brechin’s official club website: ‘It was a good start for Curtis, obviously he’s not played a lot of football, he gets his goal and he’ll get a lot better for us once he gets more games and he’s sharper.

‘But he’s a fit boy, he’s a strong boy, he’s experienced, he knows exactly what he’s doing, the more games he gets, the sharper he will be.’

However, the loanee was subsequently without a club following his release by parent club Dundee - until Brechin snapped him up on Friday on a deal until January.

Injury-ravaged 18 months at Fratton Park

The Blues had lost to Plymouth in the League Two play-off semi-finals the previous campaign and were intent on securing a happier outcome in 2016-17.

However, despite scoring on his debut with a penalty in a 3-2 Capital One Cup defeat at Coventry, Main endured a frustrating time on the south coast.

He would total six goals in 23 matches during an injury-ravaged 18 months, while fell out of favour under Cook and then his replacement Kenny Jackett.

Indeed, Cook refused to sanction the forward being presented with a League Two title medal at the Southsea Common celebrations, even though he attended with the rest of the triumphant squad.

However, the club later arranged for him to receive one in recognition of 12 league games and two goals during their promotion campaign.

Main eventually left for Motherwell in January 2018 after his contract was cancelled by mutual consent and he has since featured for Aberdeen, Shrewsbury, St Mirren, Bengaluru, Dundee, Ayr, Morton and now Brechin.
