'A nice position to be in': Rich Hughes addresses Portsmouth loan plans - and clarifies temporary trio's Fratton future
Pompey have two remaining loan slots heading into the January transfer window
Rich Hughes anticipates Pompey’s loan contingent will fulfil their agreements and remain at Fratton Park until the season’s end.
Although the Blues still plan to utilise the two remaining slots when the January transfer window opens.
Florian Bianchini, Minhyeok Yang and Conor Chaplin joined Pompey on season-long loans during the last window, yet have enjoyed mixed success.
In the case of Chaplin, Ipswich media have reported the existence of a recall clause at the halfway point, with boss Kieran McKenna keen to have that option open to him.
Regardless, with just three of their five spots taken, Pompey will again delve into the loan market to boost a struggling side now occupying the relegation zone, having won two of their last 14 matches.
‘It’s something we’ll look at’
Hughes told The News: ‘As things stand, we would anticipate our loanees being here for the (full) season, but there are obviously details of all three loans which may lead to different circumstances.
‘However, we anticipate all three to be here for the rest of the season.
‘We have two spots still available and, if there are other players who are going to come in and improve the starting XI in the group, then it’s something we’ll look at.
‘It’s nice to have that flexibility. When you go back to my first window at the club (January 2023), we had to move loans out before we could actually loan someone in and have that ability to operate without restrictions.
‘So it’s quite a nice position to be in as opposed to where we found ourselves a couple of years ago.’
Last January, of the eight players recruited to bolster Pompey’s survival hopes, four arrived on loan: Rob Atkinson, Isaac Hayden, Adil Aouchiche and Kaide Gordon.

Of those January arrivals, Liverpool winger Gordon was subsequently a bit-part performer, with five appearances off the bench, yet the remaining three all played strong roles in the Blues remaining in the Championship.
Indeed, with Freddie Potts and Mark O’Mahony already here, Pompey had six registered loanees during the second half of the campaign, albeit restricted to five in the 20-man match-day squad.
Hughes: ‘It’s about having parallel strategies’
Now there are two slots available - although there’s one remaining space in the 25-man Football League squad which must be submitted after February 2, when the window closes.
Hughes added: ‘Last January was very much here and now in terms of a couple of the players, but it’s about having parallel strategies and both things can be true.
‘We want to improve the longer-term asset value of the football club and we also want to maintain the short-term success - and a successful window allows us to do both of those things.’
