The clock is quickly ticking down to the official opening of the January transfer window - and it’s fair to say the Fratton faithful are eagerly waiting to see what the Blues’ recruitment team have up their sleeves this year.
Last term’s winter window proved a huge success, with the eight new signings introduced to John Mousinho’s first-team ranks helping Pompey move clear of the threat of relegation with two games of the season to spare.
A similar success story would be very much welcome next month as the Blues sit third from bottom in the Championship table going into their hugely-important fixture against Charlton at Fratton Park tonight.
But history shows not all signings work out as anticipated.
With that in mind, we asked AI to name what it considers to be Pompey’s best January arrivals - and who it believes ranks as the club’s worst.
Here’s what it came up with. See if you agree or disagree. Or whether you can think of better examples.

2. Best: Lassana Diarra (January 2008)
Details: Joined from Arsenal for £5.5m. Pompey appearances: 32 (3 goals). Departed: January 2009 - Real Madrid (£20m). What AI has said: One of Pompey’s most successful winter deals, Diarra joined from Arsenal and was a key figure in midfield as Portsmouth went on to win the FA Cup in 2008. His performances were so strong that Real Madrid paid a significant fee to sign him about a year later. | AFP via Getty Images

3. Worst: Sylvain Deslandes (January 2018)
Details: Joined on loan from Wolves until end of the season. Pompey appearances: 2 (0 goals) Departed: Summer 2018 - returned to Wolves. What AI has said: Signed on loan from Wolves, Deslandes barely featured (just a couple of substitute appearances) and failed to impress during his stint at Fratton Park. Photo: Joe Pepler

4. Best: Jermaine Defoe (January 2008)
Details: Signed on a permanent deal from Spurs for £7.5m. Pompey appearances: 36 appearances (17 goals). Departed: January 2009 - Spurs (£15m) What AI has said: Signed from Tottenham Hotspur, Defoe was a terrific acquisition in the winter window — his goals and overall play helped stabilize Portsmouth in the Premier League. His time at the club was productive and he later moved back to Spurs for a healthy profit. | Getty Images
