Portsmouth man seals potentially permanent Fratton Park exit after clinching A-League return

The former Australia Under-23 international has made three appearances for the Blues

Jacob Farrell has sealed his return to the A-League in the search for regular football.

The Pompey left-back has joined Sydney FC on season-long loan after recovering from the groin injury which has sidelined him since April.

The Blues had hoped to offload the 23-year-old this summer - now they have secured him a move to the New South Wales club in the last few hours of the Australian transfer window.

According to Sydney, the arrangement includes an option to make the move permanent at the end of the campaign.

Although, with his Fratton Park contract expiring in the summer of 2028, Farrell could still return to Pompey upon the end of his Sydney stay.

Still, it represents the opportunity for first-team football for a highly-regarded player whose injuries have restricted him to just three appearances in two years since joining the Blues in July 2024.

And Sydney FC head coach Patrick Kisnorbo is delighted to complete a move for Farrell.

‘At 23 he is at a really good age. He has already achieved a lot, but he still has plenty of development ahead of him and we believe he can perform at a very high level for us this season.

‘He gives us versatility on the left side of defence, can play at full back or centre back and brings good physical qualities, competitiveness and experience of winning.’

It marks a third A-League club for Farrell, who began his career at Central Coast Mariners, while played seven games on loan at Western Sydney Warriors in the second half of last season.

Sydney FC, the former club of Pompey team-mates Hayden Matthews and Adrian Segecic, finished fifth in the A-League last season, although they progressed to the grand final, where they lost 1-0 to Auckland in May.

Farrell becomes the sixth player to leave Pompey on loan this summer, joining Josef Bursk (AFC Wimbledon), Matthews (Bradford), Jordan Williams (Blackpool), Makenzie Kirk (Barnsley) and Josh Knight (Reading).

Ibane Bowat is the Blues’ only sale, having joined League One Huddersfield for an undisclosed fee in July.
