Former Portsmouth midfielder available for free transfer after being released by League One side
Former Pompey midfielder to become free agent after being told his five-year Doncaster Rovers stay is over
Former Pompey midfielder Ben Close will be on the move this summer.
The Blues academy graduate has been told his Doncaster Rovers contract won’t be renewed upon its expiry in June, allowing him to leave the Eco Power Stadium on a free transfer.
The Southsea lad is one of seven Donny players who have been told by manager Grant McCann that their days with the club are over.
Close will leave after making 124 appearances for Rovers following his free-transfer move from Pompey in the summer of 2021.
Twenty-one of those outings came this season. However, only nine have come in the way of league starts. Meanwhile, the central midfielder has been used sparringly over the second half of the season after suffering a chest/lung injury against Stockport County at the end of December.
That was the latest injury setback suffered by the former Priory School pupil, whose progress at the Eco Power Stadium has been hampered by a number of injuries during his five-year stay with the League One club.
Last season, Close spent the second half of the campaign at National League side Easteigh, featuring 16 times for the National League side.
The midfielder amassed 190 senior appearances for the Blues after making his debut in September 2014.
Close netted 18 goals for Pompey during his time at PO4 and also started the EFL Trophy final victory against Sunderland in March 2019.
