'Portsmouth FC incarnate' - Former Derby midfielder Ebou Adams on course for coveted crown - after just 73 days at Fratton Park
Ebou Adams has made an instant impact at Fratton Park following his move from Derby County in January
Ebou Adams is a serious contender for Pompey’s player of the season.
That’s despite the midfielder featuring just 14 times for the Blues to date, and only arriving at the club in January when John Mousinho’s side had already completed half their 2025-26 Championship fixtures.
However, such has been the former Derby man’s impact at Fratton Park following his £500,000 move from the Rams, he’s already played himself into contention for the coveted end-of-season gong.
Adams Fratton Park impact
Adams, who has given Pompey’s midfield a completely new dimension, has made himself an instant hero among the Fratton faithful with his all-action, energetic displays.
The 30-year-old also wrote himself into Fratton Park folkore when he denied Southampton victory at PO4 back in January with a 77th-munite equalier in the south coast derby.
His impressive displays during his 73-day stint have unfortunately not rubbed off on all of his new Blues team-mates, though, whose struggles at present have Pompey sitting just one point above the relegation zone with eight games left to play.
How many of those remaining games The Gambia international will play remains to be seen. The midfielder picked up a knee injury in the Blues’ 6-1 hammering at QPR last weekend, a game that saw Adams played out of position.
It’s a decision that backfired on John Mousinho as he looked to find a way to end a run of form that has seen the Fratton Park side beaten in five of their last six games.
Adams will be crucial if the Blues can reverse that trend - as talk of him being a contender for the player of the year award proves.
Advocating his claim for the award, The News’ Jordan Cross said everything about Adams’ play resonates with the club’s identity.
‘I’ve think he’s been Pompey’s best player (since arriving in January)’, said Cross in the latest episode of Pompey Talk.
‘I think he’s in player of the season contention.
‘To think (also) that he’s negotiated Ramadan and observed Ramadan in that period, for a player of high energy like that, he’s just enthused the team, he dovetails really well with Marlon Pack, and he’s been a breath of fresh air
‘I called him Portmsouth FC incarnate, he’s the embodiment of Portsmouth Football Club and I hopefully suggest not too many could argue with that.’
Adams was this week forced to withdraw from The Gambia’s latest squad for their international friendly against Senegal because of the injury sustained at Loftus Road.
An update on any recovery will likely come on Wednesday ahead of the Blues’ trip to Norwich on Good Friday.
