Birmingham City launch investigation after supporters accused of 'verbally abusing' Portsmouth players
The Pompey Women midfielder made the claims after Sunday’s St Andrew’s fixture
A Pompey player has condemned Birmingham Women supporters for the level of ‘abuse’ directed at them in Sunday’s match.
Now the St Andrew’s club have launched an internal review to address Ella Rutherford’s accusations.
Jay Sadler’s side lost 5-2 in the Women’s Super League 2 encounter, having conceded three times in the final 14 minutes.

Afterwards, Rutherford, who appeared as a half-time substitute, took to Instagram to allege her and team-mates were ‘verbally abused’ by Birmingham fans in attendance.
She also claimed she raised the issue ‘throughout and after the game’ to match officials and security, to no effect.
Birmingham swiftly issued a response, pledging to investigate the allegations from Pompey’s attacking midfielder.
‘There is no space for abuse in this beautiful game’
Rutherford said: ‘@bcfcwomen fans do better. There is no space for abuse in this beautiful game.
‘Throughout and after the game despite reporting it to match officials and security it continued.
‘Interacting with fans after games is not a requirement however players however players in the women’s game do it to show appreciation for the support.
‘Unfortunately this opens the door for interactions like today where for no reason myself and my team mates were verbally abused.’
Rutherford, who is in a relationship with social media personality GK Barry, arrived at Fratton Park in August, following her release from Ipswich.

The 25-year-old has made six appearances so far for Pompey, who are presently five points clear of the relegation zone after recent successive victories.
A sixth league win of the season leaves them in second place - the final automatic promotion spot - as they attempt to reach the top flight.
‘A zero-tolerance policy’
Following Rutherford’s social media post, a statement on Birmingham City Women’s Facebook account said: ‘The club has issued the following update about supporter conduct.
‘Birmingham City has a zero-tolerance policy towards abusive, discriminatory or anti-social behaviour inside or around our stadium. The club is aware of allegations made on social media following today’s (Sunday’s) match.
‘Club officials have begun an internal review of the matter, and Portsmouth have also been contacted as part of this process.
‘Once the full facts have been established, Birmingham City will take the appropriate action in line with the Club’s policies and values.’
