The key factors as Portsmouth's transfer chase of Hull City's Abu Kamara develops
Pompey are hopeful over bringing Abu Kamara back to Fratton Park, as they offer a home for the League One title hero to flourish - but the transfer picture is developing all the time.
It’s a fairly unusual departure from Pompey’s football operation in recent times.
Gone are the days of Harry Redknapp, where any touted transfer target of merit put to the former Blues boss would elicit a juicy quote, ‘good player, I like him’ being the minimum response.
The press conference standard these days is a defensive block with etiquette maintained, as those names which surface are thrown at head coaches with the dictaphones turned on.
It’s an approach John Mousinho adopted fairly early on in his managerial education, in part a consequence of causing some consternation at Portman Road when highlighting Panutche Camara’s injury record when playing down links with the Ipswich Town midfielder back in 2023.
Now the repeated policy is players under contract elsewhere are off limits, a line dolled out with a smile as the local press pack do their jobs by asking about those linked with a move to PO4.
So sporting director Rich Hughes’ departure from the script to confirm Abu Kamara is a wanted man this summer is worthy of some consideration.
Pompey’s interest in the League One title hero is long established and has never wavered, since Hull City's deep pockets lured the winger to the MKM Stadium two years ago.
Hughes has underlined this continuing stance on more than one occasion this summer, as the Blues’ increased transfer spending brings Kamara back within their range after they were priced out by the £3.5m the Tigers stumped up.
‘We understand the excitement (from fans) on that one with Abu,’ he told the BBC last week. ‘I think - as we’ve alluded too - it’s something that has always been of interest to the club.’
In making that statement, Hughes has not just shown appreciation for Kamara as a player, but underlined there’s a lot of love around these parts for the man who blossomed across his 2023-24 loan stay.
For a player who’s not necessarily felt a huge amount of affection over the past couple of years, it’s a reminder he can have a home back where he played the best football of his young career to date.
There has been a quiet confidence at the Pompey end a deal can be agreed with Hull for the 23-year-old, a line confirmed by The News just over a week ago.
However a move may not be imminent with talkSPORT’s Alex Crook pointing a finger towards the player’s agent as the dominant factor for that, even though Kamara’s current employers are happy to see him return to Fratton.
That chimes with The News’ information on the issue, which suggests the Londoner won’t be going anywhere anytime soon. Whether that will be the case we’ll see, but sitting tight allows other potential suitors to come to the table with Charlton Athletic’s name the latest to be mentioned.
The suggestion, however, is Kamara’s preference is clear - a return to where he knows he’s cherished. Perhaps that shouldn’t be underestimated, after a Hull stay which has been fair from plain sailing to date.
Kamara, of course, was bizarrely paraded in front of the media by his own boss at the start of last year, over a fairly innocuous social media response to Paddy Lane scoring a Pompey goal. That after finding himself the subject of fan flak over the issue.
That came across a testing maiden season as Hull stayed in the Championship by the skin of their teeth. Things then didn’t get much better, as a lack of minutes and injury defined a tough loan stay in Spain with Getafe last term.
The wisdom of Kamara’s career choices to date can legitimately be questioned, but this is a quiet and reserved character who is being guided by the people around him.
There’s good and bad in every profession and football agents are no different. Ultimately, however, the competent exponents will place their client’s interests over remuneration and any issues between the two parties.
And, for Kamara’s part, maybe now is the time to show the strength of his convictions over his destiny. It may just be what’s required to see his career firmly back on track in a setting where he can thrive.
