Former Portsmouth striker Kusini Yengi told he can leave club less than six months after free transfer move - but 'club's around world keen'
Reports claim former Pompey striker Kusini Yengi will leave Aberdeen in January
Aberdeen are set to call time on Kusini Yengi’s spell in the Scottish Premiership - less that six months after making the switch to Pittodrie.
That’s according to the Press and Journal, who are reporting the Dons will sanction a move away for the former Pompey striker in the January transfer wndow.
Yengi signed a three-year deal with Jimmy Thelin’s side when he arrived on a free transfer from the Blues in June. But his move north of the border hasn’t worked out.
The 26-year-old has netted just one goal for the club - which came against Morton in the Scottish League Cup on August 16. The Australian international has also been limited to just nine Aberdeen appearances.
The deadline day signings of Marko Lazetic and Kevin Nisbet have pushed the striker down the pecking order at Pittodrie, with Yengi not starting a game in any competition for the Scottish Premiership side since the end of August.
His last league appearance came against Dundee United on September 23, while a 19-munute cameo appearance from the bench against AEK Athens in the Europa Conference League on October 23 is his only outing since the beginning of that month.
Indeed, the former Fratton favourite has been either an unused sub or has missed out on match-day selection altogether for eight of Aberdeen’s past nine matches. That’s despite Thelin’s side sitting eighth in the Scottish top flight and scoring only nine goals in 12 league appearances.
With the 11-times capped Socceroo understandably growing frustrated with his situation - with next summer’s World Cup also just around the corner - it’s claimed the Dons will sanction his exit at the earliest possibility.
And it’s understood he won’t be short of offers, with the Press and Journal report claiming there’s interest from clubs across the world - including Europe, Japan, USA and in League One.
Why Kusini Yengi left Pompey
Yengi initially proved a huge hit at Pompey, with the former Western Sydney Wanderers frontman netting nine League One goals in 26 appearances as the Blues won the 2023-24 third-tier title and booked a return to the Championship.
He was expected to be a key player for John Mousinho’s side in the second tier, but a series of injuries and lack of form saw him permitted to leave Fratton Park on a free transfer last summer, despite the club having the option of an additional 12 months.
Yengi’s last season at the club saw him feature just 14 times, with none of those outings producing a goal. His effort for Aberdeen against Morton is his only competitive goal in 2025.
Following his departure, the Blues signed Makenzie Kirk from Scottish Championship side St Johnstone. However, he’s scored just one goal for Pompey, while Colby Bishop is currently stuck on just one goal for the season as Mousinho’s side struggle in front of goal.
