Portsmouth facing prospect of League One season being cancelled next week
Pompey’s League One season could be abandoned next week, according to reports.
A vote is likely to take place to decide the campaign’s destiny in a conference call scheduled for lower-league clubs next Thursday, reports the Daily Mail.
There now appears to be growing view among EFL members finishing the final games in League One and League Two will prove impossible amid the coronavirus crisis.
That’s a sentiment aired by Pompey chief executive Mark Catlin this week, despite being a staunch advocate of playing the season to a conclusion.
Football, like the rest of the UK, is waiting to see what steps will be taken by the government when Prime Minister Boris Johnson addresses the nation on Sunday.
There’s deep concerns, however, about the cost of safely staging games amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
The reports suggests doing so would leave clubs in a worse position financially than they already are.
It also airs the prospect of three teams being promoted with points-per-game possibly deciding the outfit to reach the Championship outside of automatic slots, currently occupied by Coventry and Rotherham.
If that scenario was played out, Wycombe and not Pompey, who currently sit fourth, would be the side to go up.
