Portsmouth defender coming towards end of 15-month injury nightmare

Joe Hancott has returned to full training as he comes towards the end of his injury nightmare.

The Pompey left-back has been on the sidelines since October 2019 after damaging his ACL in his right knee during training.

Hancott, who became the youngster player Blues post-war history aged 16 years and 161 days in August 2017, underwent major surgery and has not played since.

He had his third-year scholarship at Fratton Park in the summer to ensure he makes a full recovery.

However, the 19-year-old is nearing his return to match fitness as he bids to get his career back on track.

Player development manager Mark Kelly said: ‘Joe is coming on nicely. He is back in training and has had a lot to deal with.

‘He had his knee operation and there was a little complication but he seems to be getting over that now.

‘He is just starting to really train again and is back in full training now.

‘Hopefully, in the next month or so, we should see a proper return for him.

'It has been a hard journey for Joe, a real frustrating and hard journey because he is a great kid and wants to work hard and get his head down.

‘Sometimes these injuries just become niggly and he's been unfortunate he's picked up extras.’

Hancott, who hails from the Isle of Wight has made three appearances for Pompey – all in the EFL Trophy.
