Kavanagh, from Cowplain, skippered the academy last season which earned him third-year scholarship terms at his boyhood club.

The right-back, a former North Stand season-ticket holder, featured twice for Pompey this season in their Papa John’s Trophy campaign against West Ham under-21s and Peterborough.

He also had a spell on loan at Gosport Borough but that was halted because of the coronavirus crisis which ground non-elite sport to a halt.

And coming towards the end of his contract, Kavanagh’s been told he will not be handed fresh terms at PO4.

Kavanagh wrote on Twitter: ‘Extremely mixed emotions but my 13 years at this club has come to an end.

‘Something I didn’t expect to happen but every ending is a new beginning.

‘I leave with no regrets knowing I worked as hard as I could and wore the badge with so much pride everyday. Onto the next adventure.’
