Former Pompey misfit Gassan Ahadme completes seventh transfer in 4.5 years following Charlton decision

Former loanee Gassan Ahadme saw his Pompey loan stint cut short after just five months in 2021 - now he’s on the move yet again.

Former Pompey misfit Gassan Ahadme is on the move once again.

The forward, who endured an underwhelming loan spell at Fratton Park during the first half of the 2021-22 season following a successful trial, has completed his seventh transfer in the space of four-and-a-half years.

Two years after moving from Ipswich Town to Charlton Athletic for £1m, the 25-year-old has been allowed to leave the Addicks for a second successive season on loan.

Last summer saw the the Norwich academy product join Stevenage in a temporary move that saw him feature 17 times for Boro, with his last league appearance coming in November.

This year, the one-time Morocco youthinternational, who has a contract at The Valley until 2028, has been shipped out to Cambridge United for the season.

It’s the second time Ahadme has joined the U’s on loan. It’s hoped a reunion with former boss Neil Harris will help unlock his potential.

Previously at the Abbey Stadium, the forward scored 13 goals in 33 appearances as Harris & Co finished the 2023-24 season in 18th position in League One.

Confirmng Ahadme’s switch to Cambridge, Charlton boss Nathan Jones said: ‘It’s an excellent loan for Gassan.

‘He’s going to work with someone who he’s done very well for before and someone that I know will get the best out of him.

‘Neil Harris is excellent at coaching strikers, so we’re really pleased that we’ve managed to secure that because we haven’t seen the best of Gassan yet.

‘He needs to get that fluency, that game time and that rhythm and I really do think he’ll get that at Cambridge. We wish him all the best and we’ll monitor him closely.’

Signed by Danny Cowley in 2021, Ahadme failed to establish himself in the former Pompey manager’s plans and returned to Carrow Road after just five months following one goal in 10 appearances.

Since leaving Pompey, the forward has also had two spells at Burton Albion, whom Ipswich paid £300,000 in September 2022.

Only 20 league goals have been scored for Ahadme’s various clubs in that period, including one for the Addicks.
