Portsmouth boss wants more new signings next week in time for Bristol City game

Pompey have have made nine signings this summer, but John Mousinho has reiterated more are on there way

John Mousinho is hopeful his Pompey ranks will be swelled again next week ahead of the Blues’ trip to Bristol City.

The Fratton Park boss believes ‘a couple of incomings’ will arrive in time for the game at Ashton Gate as the PO4 side continue to remain active in the transfer market.

Nine new arrivals have already given Pompey’s first-team ranks a refresh during the close season, with one of those new boys, 17-year-old Chelsea loanee Ryan Kavuma-McQueen, opening the scoring during the Blues’ 3-1 win at Lincoln City.

Speaking to Sky Sports after that impressive victory at Sincil Bank, which was Pompey’s first three-point haul of the new campaign, Mousinho admitted his squad was finally taking shape and getting to the levels expected of them.

Man-of-the-match and club captain Marlon Pack’s return from knee surgery shouldn’t be underestimated in that respect as he got his first minutes of the season under his belt against the Imps.

But with just 10 days of the transfer window remaining and Mousinho content with the progress his team is making, he confirmed further new additions were on the way.

He said: There’s still a bit of room for improvement.

‘I still think there’s a couple of incomings that we’ll have this week, leading up to the window closing next week.

‘I think the important thing for us is where we’ve been over the past couple of weeks with the eight or nine that we have signed is that they’re not quite ready to go, not quite up to scratch.

‘Ryan’s a really good example, a 17-year-old coming in, we’re trying to get him up to the level where he can play Championship games, he’s there now.

‘Abu Kamara didn’t play at all last year. We know how good he is, we just want to make sure he gets his fitness levels going.

‘There’s a lot of that with the new signings, particularly when we bring them over from foreign countries, there’s a big waiting period before they’re registered, and then we’ve got a few of the senior boys coming back as well.

‘I think he ended up being player of the match, but Marlon Pack having that control and that experience in the middle of the park - these things I think will lead to us being a much stronger squad in the next couple of weeks.’

Pompey remain keen on adding a left-back, defensive midfielder and versatile forward to their ranks in the remaining days of the window.

Liverpool defender Luke Chambers and Wolves’ Boubacar Traore have been linked.
