Portsmouth and Blackburn linked with West Brom defender - but already there's doubts about transfer to Fratton Park

Pompey continue to be linked with players as the 2026-27 season draws near

The transfer rumour mill has linked Pompey with yet another potential transfer window signing.

But rather than focusing on a prospective new arrival from abroad, which has been a common theme in recent weeks, it’s a Championship-based player that has apparently caught the Blues’ eye.

Indeed, Sky Sports are linking West Brom defender Alfie Gilchrist with a move to Fratton Park, with Pompey - along with Blackburn Rovers - supposedly seeking a loan move for the 22-year-old.

The former Chelsea youngster only moved to the Hawthorns last August for an undisclosed fee. However, the right-back struggled to establish himself in the Baggies’ first team and featured just 13 times for WBA in the league as they finished a disappointing 21st in the Championship standings.

Only eight of those Championship outings came as starts, with the former Sheffield United loanee left on the bench for 10 of West Brom’s final 12 matches.

Pompey could be interested in reinforcing their right-back position if the highly-rated Terry Devlin is sold this summer.

If the Northern Irishman leaves, Zak Swanson and Jordan Williams would be head coach John Mousinho’s only options.

Gilchrist can also operate across the back-line, having featured at centre-back and left-back for West Brom.

Could this latest transfer rumour already be about to go stale, though?

Providing an update on the link, BBC Solent’s Andy Moon is today reporting that a move for the West Brom man is unlikely.
