Pompey’s League One fate is still to be decided.
With seven games remaining, John Mousinho’s table-toppers hold a comfortable lead over nearest challengers Derby and Bolton. But until it’s mathematically impossible for them or others to overtake the Blues, then nothing can be taken for granted.
There’s still a lot of football to be played, offering the chasing pack enough of an opportunity to claim the top prizes on offer. And the same can be said for another accolade Pompey players will have on their agendas - the Pompey player of the season award.
The News will soon be opening up our vote for fans to have their say on who they believe deserves recognition. There’s certainly plenty of contenders - but who has the best chance of winning. Here’s who we think are the current runners and riders with just a few weeks of the season remaining.

9. Paddy Lane (continued)
Meanwhile, six league assists ensures he has the numbers to back up the energy he burns each time he puts on a Pompey shirt. A real Blues warrior when he crosses the white line, Lane has been a key player in Pompey’s success to date this season. | Picture: Jason Brown/ProSportsImages

10. Abu Kamara
It’s rare to see a young loanee arrive at a club like Pompey and subsequently play such a crucial role in a potential title-winning campaign. However, Kamara has defied convention and been a constant this season as Pompey chase down a route back to the Championship. Indeed, the Norwich youngster has featured in every single league game the Blues have contested this season - a feat matched only by keeper Will Norris. His quality is there for all to see, with his pace and trickery often the spark that gets the Blues going offensively. | National World

11. Abu Kamara (continued)
His 10 league assists make him Pompey’s most reliable creative force, while his seven league goals have proved valuable over the course of the season. We keep hearing how Kamara is destined for the top. Hopefully, he’ll remember the role Pompey played in getting him there! | National World
12. Kusini Yengi
A surprise contender given the often peripheral nature of his contribution this season - but there’s no denying the Aussie rookie’s impact this season has been phenomenal. Seven league goals from 22 appearances shouldn’t be sniffed that, particularly as just six of those appearances have come as starts. Meanwhile, 11 goals in all competitions during his debut season is some achievement. Yengi grabbed the headlines before the international break after he scored a magnificent winner in that important victory over Peterborough at the Weston Homes Stadium. And who will forget how he bulldozed Bolton defender Ricardo Santos - considered one of the best in the division - into submission when Pompey came out on top in that fixture back in December. | Jason Brown/ProSportsImages
