The Pompey squad that secured the League One title just seven weeks ago has since been broken up.
Meanwhile, with the Blues yet to make known any transfer dealings they’ve been working on ahead of Friday’s official opening of the transfer window, it’s anyone’s guess how the Fratton Park starting XI will look on the opening day of the 2024-25 season on August 10.
That’s still more than eight weeks away, leaving sporting director Rich Hughes and head coach John Mousinho with plenty of time to assemble a squad they feel will be well-equipped to compete in the Championship next season.
With the likes Joe Rafferty, Sean Raggett, Abu Kamara, Tino Anjorin and Matt Macey all leaving the club following the conclusion of the 2023-24 campaign, we all know what areas of the squad need reinforcing more than others.
But what players are taking the pressure off the Blues’ recruitment team this summer? Here are six players who are guaranteed starters for when the season kicks off on August 10.

5. Paddy Lane
The winger played a key role in Pompey's success last season as he chipped in with 12 league goals and seven assists as the Blues secured the League One title. His career has been on an upward tracjectory ever since the 23-year-old swapped Fleetwood for the Blues in January 2023 and his importance to Pompey undoubtedly grew as last season progressed. A real favourite of the Fratton fans for his emergy and, erm, drinking skills, Lane can expect to play another key role next season. He turned down the chance to go away with Northern Ireland this week to concentrate on being fresh for his Pompey return. 6. Colby Bishop
The striker has bagged an impressive 45 goals in 100 appearances for Pompey during his two years at the club. The Blues have spent a lot of money in recent years to find a striker capable of those types of numbers in recent years - and failed miserably in the process. The striker has attracted some criticism during his PO4 stay, but his numbers speak for themself. No doubt there'll be fans keen to see Kusini Yengi handed more of a chance next term, but that shouldn't be at Bishop's expense. Photo: Bryn Lennon
