John Mousinho’s men bounced back from a dreadfully dull first half to raise their game in the second half and should really have taken the lead through Makenzie Kirk.
However, the striker, marking his full debut, failed to convert substitute Josh Murphy’s cross from five yards out – and moments later Stoke claimed the decisive goal after heading Sorba Thomas’ cross into his own net.
The Blues failed to respond to that 71st-minute set-back and Stoke cantered to victory. And here are our Pompey player ratings...

5. Regan Poole - 7 - MOM
Scrapped and fought away, while it was a fascinating battle with the dangerous Mubama. He been a consistently high performer for the Blues this season and this was another occasion. Photo: Graham Hunt

6. Connor Ogilvie - 6
So, so from the left-back, but hasn’t yet had the same impact from attacking positions this season, with his crossing disappointing. Gives you all in defence, though. Photo: Steve Bailey

7. Andre Dozzell - 6
(Replaced by Mark Kosznovszky on 85 mins) Wonderful pass from deep in own half to send Kirk away for one first-half shooting opportunity. Otherwise was a little more subdued than usual, particularly in the second half when Blues couldn’t keep possession. Photo: Steve Bailey

8. Marlon Pack - 7
Again the driving force from midfield, while provided two great crosses into the box at the start of the second half which caused problems. Three games in a week didn’t seem to impact the veteran. Photo: Graham Hunt
