League Two player of the month at 40 - the obscure figure from Portsmouth’s past
The Gillingham star enjoyed a brief connection with Fratton Park in 2012
Former Pompey triallist Glenn Morris has won the League Two Player of the Month award at 40-years-old.
The Gillingham goalkeeper has won the award for the first time in his career, after a month in which he has made a number of critical saves against several strong sides. Morris has conceded five goals in ten matches, helping his club to six wins and one draw as Gillingham sit second in the league.
Those Blues stattos with a good memory may recall Morris appearing for their side 12 years ago, as he aimed to win himself a Fratton contract in pre-season.
On receiving the trophy, the 40-year-old shot stopper said: “It’s a great honour and I am really pleased to have picked it up. I couldn’t have done it without the rest of the team. They are the ones that put bodies on the line to keep a clean sheet. It’s brilliant, I am enjoying making saves!”

Gillingham head coach Mark Bonner added to Morris’s comments by saying: “Glenn is a deserved recipient of this award after an excellent month. He will be first to credit the team ahead of himself, but he has shown all of the qualities that have given him a career heading towards 600 games.
“His calm temperament and exceptional shot stopping throughout resulted in the team achieving another good points return in the month.“
Morris is fast approaching 600 professional appearances across all competitions and while he has been with his current side since joining on an initial loan spell in 2022, there was a time that Morris could have been a Blue.
In May 2012, the goalkeeper was one of eleven players to be released from Southend United at the end of their contracts and subsequently headed to Fratton Park to trial over the summer. Pompey had just been relegated from the Championship and were preparing for their first season in the EFL third tier as they welcomed Morris who would keep goal against Aldershot, Bolton and AFC Wimbledon during pre-season.
He was not, however, offered a contract and went on to sign with Aldershot on an initial six-month deal which was extended until the end of the season.
