'It comes down to...' - Portsmouth told what they must do to prise Abu Kamara away from Hull City as talks 'ongoing'

Former Fratton Park loanee Abu Kamara is wanted by Pompey again

Pompey remain in discussions with Hull City over a Fratton Park return for Abu Kamara.

However, a deal depends on whether the Blues ‘can match’ the figure the Tigers are determined to get for the winger.

That’s according to Hull Live’s Barry Cooper, who claims talks haven’t progressed much since news of the Blues’ interest in their former loanee emerged at the beginning of the week.

Cooper added, though, the 22-year-old, who played a key role in Pompey’s 2023-24 League One title success, was open to a switch back to the south coast and that a move away from the MKM Stadium this summer is likely.

‘Kamara would be open to it’

Providing the latest intel from the Hull end of a potential deal, Cooper told The 1904 Club podcast: ‘Discussions are ongoing. It’s not really moved anywhere yet from when we reported it the other day.

‘Portsmouth want him back, I think Kamara would be open to it.

‘Interestingly on that, as it stands, he will return for pre-season training with Hull City and the manager likes him so does he get given a chance in pre-season to impress?

‘I think the likelihood is that he will move on. Portsmouth want him, City are open to it. It comes down to whether Portsmouth can match the numbers that City want.’

Pompey’s longstanding admiration for Kamara

Pompey have held a long-term interest in former Fratton favourite Kamara, who helped get the Blues back to the Championship after 12 years away when on loan from Norwich three seasons ago.

The winger scored 10 goals and provided 11 assists for Mousinho’s title-winning side. And while the Fratton Park club were at the time keen to make his temporary stay permanent, they couldn’t compete with Hull as they forked out £3m-plus on the former England under-20 international in the summer of 2024.

Signing a four-year deal, Kamara is under contract with the Tigers until 2028.

However, his time at the recently-promoted Premier League side has been far from plain sailing.

The Carrow Road academy graduate has failed to match the impressive form he produced during his successful season-long loan at Fratton Park.

The forward has managed just five goals and three assists in 40 appearances for Hull, and featured just twice in the Championship last term before being granted a loan move to Getafe, where he failed to net in any of his 13 La Liga outings last season.

Pompey to make right-wing signing

The Blues are in the market for a right-sided forward this summer following the departure of loanee Gustavo Caballero.

Mousinho currently has Harvey Blair and Franco Umeh as his current right-wing options, while Keshi Anderson, Adrian Segecic new-signing Odin Bailey can slot in there if required.

Eoin Kenny, who is reportedly poised to complete a move from Dundalk to Pompey, also prefers to play wide right.
