How Portsmouth fared against Aston Villa last night as Premier League Cup campaign came to close

Pompey’s Premier League Cup campaign ended in defeat as a youthful side went down to a 3-0 reverse against Aston Villa.

Three second-half goals did the damage at Bognor’s Nyewood Lane in the Blues’ sixth game in the competition, as the game beat the conditions after being called off last week.

American goalkeeper Duncan Turnbull was expected to be given a runout in the under-23 competition, but that never took place with Lewes keeper Taylor Seymout instead utlilised between the sticks.

Matt Casey, who made three Checkatrade Trophy appearances last term, was the only player with any first-team experience involved as Academy boss Mark Kelly took the team for the game.

Pompey held off the Premier League side for 53 minutes before highly-touted midfielder Aaron Ramsey made the breakthrough.

The second goal came from striker Tyreik Wright before winger Jaden Philogen-Bidace wrapped up the win with 12 minutes left.

The result means Pompey finished bottom of Group D with one point, after they were given a bye to the group stages of the competition last September.
