However, they were made to battle for the win after the break, with Nathanael Ogbeta halving the visitors’ lead, before John Marquis picked up a straight red card for a challenge on Harrison Chapman on 70 minutes.

However, Pompey held on to claim a second successive win under their new manager and move back into the play-off places.

Here’s how Pompey fans reacted on Twitter…

@fireupthearcade: Possession based football first half, gritty backs to the walls second half.

Thought our subs today were spot on!! Great win Pompey.

@JakeAlfordPFC: Great result. Quality 1st half. Resilient 2nd half.

Frustrating that the manager change didn't happen in January or we'd be pushing for the title in my opinion.

Up the Blues

@jakemeyers2015: Nice one #Pompey

Cowley's 100% record remains intact

Dug in deep, didn't fall apart after the red card, stayed professional despite Shrews' unsporting play. Happy days!

@dazza_nics: Wasn’t expecting to feel that nervous in the 2nd half but got there in the end!

Good to see the resolute side is there as well! Caaaaaaaam on!! #Pompey #UpTheBlues.

@ChrisMoat96: Well, we made it difficult for ourselves in the second half, but Shrewsbury never looked like getting an equaliser.

Great game management, great shift from the lads.

You can see the togetherness and the spirit in this team now. Love it. #Pompey.

@craggydog13: There’s no way in the world we would have held out for the win with ten men under Jackett!

Massive 3 points #PFC #Pompey

@ACrawford1987: Brilliant from #Pompey - played great football in the first half and then showed terrific fight to see the game out with 10 men, Shrewsbury never created a chance despite being a man up! Onwards and upwards we go!
