Former Portsmouth and Bristol Rovers favourite Lee Brown comes to runner's aid to help them finish London Marathon
Lee Brown featured more than 100 times for Pompey and was a huge favourite among both the players and fans during his three-and-a-half-year stint at Fratton Park
Former Pompey favourite Lee Brown has proven what a top bloke he is.
That’s after the one-time Blues defender was spotted coming to the aid of an exhausted runner near the end of last Sunday’s London Marathon.
Video footage has emerged showing the now 35-year-old going the extra mile to help a fellow entrant complete the 26.2m course around the capital.
With the help of another runner, Brown is seen helping the person navigate their way past Buckingham Palace, before turning down The Mall, where the marathon concludes.
No doubt, the ex-Pompey full-back - who was sporting a top very similar to the Blues’ 2019-20 home shirt - will have been feeling the strain of the course and warm conditions himself regardless of his 13-year career as a professional footballer.
However, he unselfishly prolonged his own finish to come to his fellow runner’s rescue to ensure they too crossed the line.
In the end, Brown posted a time of 4hrs 12mins and 31secs, which seen him place 24,349th in the London Marathon.
It will not go down as his biggest sporting accomplishment in the capital. In 2019, Brown was part of the Pompey team that beat Sunderland in the EFL Trophy final in front of a Wembley crowd of 85,021. He also helped Bristol Rovers return to the Football League via the Conference play-offs in 2015 as the Gas saw off Grimsby at the home of football.
Yet his good deed might just give him as much satisfaction, with his act of kindness in keeping with the principles of the charity he was running for - the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Brown made 131 appearances for the Blues following his arrival on a free transfer from Bristol Rovers in July 2018. He was allowed to join AFC Wimbledon for a nominal fee in January 2022.
