FA Cup-winning hero Kanu’s Portsmouth faux pas on anniversary of Wembley glory
Today marks the 12th anniversary of Pompey’s glorious FA Cup-final victory over Cardiff.
And that’s meant plenty of reminiscing over the Wembley win, as well as the Blues faithful reliving the game’s key moments on social media.
Things went a little awry this afternoon, however, as Pompey tweeted a video of Kanu’s winner in the 1-0 success on May 17, 2008.
The man, nicknamed King, was as cool as you like in front of a 89,874 on that legendary afternoon but fluffed his lines this time around, as he responded: ‘Play on Pompey, Pompey play on’.
Kanu may not be able to remember two of the six words to the Blues’ world-famous chant, but supporters managed to see the funny side of his slip-up.
‘If King Kanu says that’s the chant that’s the chant,’ quipped Joe Wallace in a light-hearted riposte.
‘Close enough!’ added Sam, while Ben Tabbner comeback was: ‘Nah, that’s the chant from now on, cheers King.’
And Dan Fearnley kept up the banter as he replied: ‘Only Kanu can get it so wrong and still be a legend. Wanted to use Nwankwo as my daughter’s middle name but I wasn’t allowed.’
