Mark Sykes’ 50th-minute goal gave the Championship side a Fratton Park victory in a match keeper Max O’Leary was barely tested.
Nonetheless, Pompey fans can be encouraged by a second-half display operating far more on the front foot, with a couple of eye-catching performers.
Here are our Blues player ratings...

5. Connor Ogilvie - 7
One of three players to complete the full 90 minutes and clearly will start the season as Mousinho’s preferred left-back. Noticeably trying to get forward more during pre-season and enjoyed a better second half in terms of attacking. Photo: Jason Brown

6. Marlon Pack - 7
Having sat out AFC Wimbledon, was granted the full 90 minutes and grew into the game. Like many of his team-mates, was more effective in the second half as the Blues enjoyed far more possession. Photo: Jason Brown

7. Joe Morrell - 7
(Replaced by Terry Devlin on 87 minutes) Always gives a bit of welcome bite to Pompey’s play, having exchanges with at least two Bristol City players. As long as he doesn’t overstep the line. Had a strong pre-season and has been the pick of all the central midfielders. Entering the season bang in form. Photo: Jason Brown

8. Tom Lowery - 7
(Replaced by Jack Sparkes on 77 minutes) One excellent defensive interception in the first half, yet overall couldn’t get involved in the opening 45 minutes. Was far better after the break, where he popped up more on the right and put some good deliveries in, including one excellent cross to Scully which the defender headed away in the nick of time.
