Christian Burgess outlines why Portsmouth won't run out of steam again this season

Pompey will avoid a repeat of running out of steam at the end of a gruelling season.

That’s the verdict of Christian Burgess, who believes his side have the squad depth to handle the frenetic period of games they’re embarking on.

Many observers believe Kenny Jackett’s side ran out of gas at the end of last term, as the demands of the packed programme caught up on them through a five-game winless finale and play-off defeat.

The depth has been seen with six players with significant experience being left out of the matchday 18 for the past two games.

Burgess feels that will prove crucial for Pompey through the run-in.

He said: ‘I think we have a big squad.

‘Every time someone picks up a injury there’s someone to come in.

‘Our bench and beyond has quality, so I’m not worried about it.

‘There’s depth there and it keeps everyone it. Maybe that’s a factor in the performances at the minute.’

Managing a squad with options which stand up well at League One level is a challenge which lies ahead for Jackett.

Burgess accepts there will be unhappy players not featuring, but feels his team-mates will be ready when called upon.

He added: ‘The depth is very good. Everyone on the bench could be in the team.

‘While that’s pleasing people will be disappointed but it’s up to them as professionals to be ready.

‘It’s a team game and we want to achieve things together.’
