Championship clubs preparing to swoop for Sheffield Wednesday midfielder who Portsmouth and Millwall wanted in January

January transfer target Svante Ingelsson has a host of clubs ready to steal him away from relegated Sheffield Wednesday in the summer

Sheffield Wednesday are anticipating stong interest in January Pompey target Svante Ingelsson in the summer.

Our sister paper, The Star, are today reporting that the Owls are bracing themselves to be inundated with enquiries for the midfielder, who has been their standout performer during a troubling campaign that will see the Hillsborough side compete in League One next season.

The already-relegated club will take up the one-year option they have on the Swede’s contract, which expires in June.

Yet that won’t prevent clubs from circulating, looking to take advantage of Wednesday’s situation.

According to The Star, Stoke City are the latest club to demonstrate a strong interest in the former Hansa Rostock player, who moved to south Yorkshire on a free transfer in 2024.

West Brom, Preston North End and Sheffield United have also been credited with an admiration for the 27-year-old, who has featured 41 times for the Owls this season.

Yet it’s been Pompey and promotion-chasing Millwall who have demonstrated the most transparent interest in a player, who is poised to be named Sheffield Wednesday’s player of the season. They both had offers in the region of £300,000 for Ingelsson rejected during the January transfer window, after he made it known he was not prepared to leave Hillsborough at that stage of the season.

At the time, The News came to learn that any move for Ingelsson was complex and that personal reasons where hampering any efforts to entice him to the south coast.

That led to Pompey abandoning their pursuit of the player late in the transfer window and the Blues making Ebou Adams their only midfield reinforcement during the winter transfer window.

Whether the Blues try their luck again in the summer remains to be seen.

But with both Andre Dozzell and Marlon Pack out of contract in the summer and the jury still out on Luke Le Roux, midfield is sure to come under their transfer microscope once again during the close season.
