But to achieve that, there’s an argument that boss Kenny Jackett needs to turn to some of his fringe players at a time when the games are coming thick and fast.
Too many players are out of form at present – hence the lack of consistency – and that could boil down to the number of matches being played.
We keep being told the Blues have the strength and depth to pull off promotion, so now is the time to use it with a few small adjustments to freshen the starting line-up up.
Of course, some players remain central and are required to battle their way through certain lean spells.
Meanwhile, injuries in key areas make options limited.
However, there’s still enough in this squad to make the necessary changes and to keep others on their toes as Pompey bid to remain in the promotion hunt.
Here’s a suggestion how Pompey could line up tonight...

5. Charlie Daniels - left-back
Lee Brown's costly error against Gillingham will not have done him any favours. However, it's important to keep things fresh, and with Daniels sitting out the past two games, maybe a return to starting XI will benefit all parties. Needs to improve, though, defensively. Photo: JPIMedia

6. Marcus Harness - right-wing
There's no denying Harness is struggling for form at the moment. Showed a rare glimpse of what he can do in setting up Sean Raggett for Pompey's only goal against Gillingham but soon went missing. Needs to get out of current rut quickly. Past reputations only have limited shelf-life - but for now Harness' potential means he gets benefit of doubt. Photo: JPIMedia

7. Tom Naylor - central-mdfield
Like others around him, Naylor is not hitting the heights we know he can. Remains a seven out of 10 each game, though, and a key player in the Blues' engine room. Photo: JPIMedia

8. George Byers - central-midfield
Andy Cannon hasn't had the same impact in recent games, which suggests a rest might not be a bad thing. Byers has quality but hasn't delivered it on a consistent basis since arriving in January. Has not played since the defeat to Blackpool - but now might be the time to reintroduce him to the team. Photo: JPIMedia
