At the 12-game mark, John Mousinho’s men remain undefeated and six points clear of third spot after racking up six successive wins in all competitions.
Admittedly, these are still early days for the Blues, but let’s have a look at those players who have taken them to such an encouraging position to date.
Here is every member of Pompey’s playing squad rated and reviewed for their contribution so far in the 2023-24 campaign...

5. Regan Poole - 9
The signing of the summer, the early leader as the player of the season and now newly-capped Wales international - what a start it has been at Fratton Park for the classy centre-half. Lincoln fans - and Pompey's management - thought Poole was destined for the Championship this summer and it's easy to see why. Still, the Blues pulled off a coup to capture the former Manchester United man who has consistently excelled in defence, while weighing in with three goals in his last six outings. 6. Conor Shaughnessy - 8
There was a largely lukewarm reception from Pompey fans upon his arrival from Burton, yet the Irishman has become the surprise hit of the summer recruitment drive. Even John Mousinho, who couldn't find room for the ex-Leeds man in his first squad of the season against Bristol Rovers, has admitted Shaughnessy has exceeded expectations. A superb foil for Poole, his aerial dominance and comfort on the ball has provided a new dimension to the defence, with the final 10 minutes at Wigan a particular high point. 7. Jack Sparkes - 7
Similar to Conor Shaughnessy, a summer signing which little was expected from having arrived on loan from Exeter, but another proving many people wrong. Defensively he is noticeably improving, yet it's his crossing which is comfortably Sparkes' biggest asset, particularly from dead-ball situations., with free-kicks and corners. Has thrived in Connor Ogilvie's injury absence to the extent that Pompey's Mr Reliable may struggle to find a way back in. Getting better and better. (16 games, 0 goals) Photo: Jason Brown

8. Connor Ogilvie - 7
Has been sidelined by injury since Barnsley, shortly after netting what proved to be the winner in a 3-2 success. For two seasons, nobody has been able to dislodge Ogilvie as Pompey's left-back, yet this term has a huge battle on his hands following Jack Sparkes' arrival. While his rival is superior in attack, Ogilvie excels in defence, creating a fascinating selection dilemma. Regardless, he had been ever-reliable and provided his usual steady presence before last month's injury. (9 games, 1 goal) Photo: Jason Brown
