'6-10 weeks': Portsmouth dealt striker reality check following costly West Ham challenge

Thomas Waddingham might not play for Pompey again until late October following injury picked up at West Ham

Thomas Waddingham’s latest injury setback could see him miss the first 10 weeks of the Championship season.

The striker limped off against West Ham last Saturday, just eight minutes after his introduction as a second-half substitute.

His early withdrawal was the result of a challenge from Hammers left-back Ollie Scarles, with the 21-year-old unable to continue after initially trying to run off the blow to his ankle.

Speaking at the London Stadium immediately after the Carabao Cup defeat, Mousinho said the injury didn’t look good.

Now, four days after the incident, the Pompey head coach admitted the Aussie frontman could potentially be out until late October, depending on the result of a scan.

‘Wadds (Waddingham) isn't great,’ said the Blues boss ahead of Saturday’s Championship opener against QPR at Fratton Park.

‘We're just waiting on opinions as to whether we need surgery or not.

‘If he doesn't, (you’re looking at) six to 10 weeks. If he does, then you’re pushing at the top end of that.’

Waddingham’s sidelining is the latest injury setback he’s endured since moving to Pompey from Brisbane Roar in January 2025.

The unfortunate forward has featured just 13 times and scored just the solitary goal for the Blues during that period.

Last season he was out for eight months with a persistent thigh problem.

Heading into Saturday’s game against QPR, Mousinho will have both Colby Bishop and Marko Milovanovic available to lead his attack.

However, a decision will need to be made on whether a new striker is needed as Waddingham faces a sustained period on the sidelines.

The Blues allowed fellow forward Makenzie Kirk move to League One Barnsley on loan last month.
