During that time the Blues called upon many household names – Sol Campbell, Teddy Sheringham, David James, Peter Crouch, Steve Stone and Kanu, to name but a few.
Meanwhile, stars of the beautiful game also emerged such as Gary O’Neil, Matty Taylor, Lassan Diarra, Benjani and Glen Johnson.
But what about those who will be remembered in the history books but not necessarily in our memories from that golden era on the pitch?
In truth, there’s many – more than we'd probably realise.
So to help jog your memory, here’s 15 players who you probably forgot played for Pompey during those Premiership/Premier League days.

5. Aleksandar Rodic
The striker joined Pompey on the final day of the 2005 January transfer window from Slovenian champions Gorica. He made his debut against Middlesbrough just days later, replacing Patrik Berger in the 81st minute but would feature just three more times for the Blues, totalling 100 minutes, before joining Turkish outfit Kayserispor on loan for the 2005-06 season. After spells in China, Bulgaria and Italy, Rodic retired in 2016 with nine Slovenia international caps to his name. Photo: JPIMedia

6. Ognjen Koroman
The Serbian international striker joined the Blues on loan from Russian outfit FC Akhmat Grozny in January 2006 without a great track record of scoring goals. And that was evident during his time at Fratton Park, with the then 27-year-old appearing only three times for the rest of the 05-06 season - although he did net in the 3-1 defeat against Liverpool on the final day. Koroman surprisingly returned on loan again at the start of the 06-07 season. Again, only thee games were registered before he moved to Red Star Belgrade in February 2007. Photo: Jonathan Brady

7. Collins Mbesuma
Mbesuma was touted as the new Yakubu when signing from South African side Kaiser Chiefs in 2005. But the Zambian never started a game for the Blues and made just four sub appearances before being farmed out to Portuguese side Maritimo and eventually leaving two years later. Now 37, Mbesuma joined South African outfit Pretoria Callies as a free agent after parting ways with the University of Pretoria at the end of the 2020-21 season. Photo: Matt Scott-Joynt

8. Zvonimir Vukic
The attacking midfielder joined on loan in the summer of 2005 from Ukrainian champions Shakhtar. Yet, nine appearances later and following the sacking of Alain Perrin, he was farmed out to Partizan in his native Serbia ad never returned. He scored one goal for the Blues during his short stint at Fratton Park - Pompey's first goal in their 4-1 victory against Sunderland. Photo: Jonathan Brady
