On this day: Search is on for new Pompey boss

On this day in 2009. The News reported how Pompey had begun their search for a new manager following the sacking of Tony Adams after just 22 games in charge.

With just two league wins in that time, with the last coming in a 3-2 victory against Blackburn Rovers in November, owner Sacha Gaydamak had become 'tired of results' and requested his sacking.

Former Chelsea boss Avram Grant was identified as an early favourite to replace the former Arsenal and England captain, with Paul Hart named as caretaker manager until Pompey find a replacement.

Adams' tenure at Fratton Park ended with a defeat to Liverpool, with the 3-2 loss extending the Blues' run without a league win to nine.

When interviewed by The News, Adams said: 'I did everything but it wasn’t quite enough. This club deserves to stay up for the magnificent fans.'
