Game plan works for Gosport Borough at Frome but Hawks frustrated by Plymouth Parkway

Reaction from the latest round of matches in the Southern League Premier South

Gosport Borough’s head of football Mick Catlin hailed his players after they secured their first win of the season at Frome Town on Saturday.

The Privett Park stalwart claimed the team executed the game plan perfectly as they climbed up to 16th position in the Southern League Premier South table thanks to their victory on the road.

Goals from Jordan Ngalo (16 minutes) and Amad Jallow (68) secured the three points, setting Borough up nicely for their bank holiday weekend fixtures against Malvern (at home on Saturday) and Sholing away on Monday.

‘(It was) just an unbelievable effort from all the boys, really,’ Catlin told the club’s media team.

‘We came with a game plan and they executed it perfectly

‘We've done a bit of homework on them (Frome). We knew we were going to be under a lot of pressure from set-pieces and balls into the box.

‘We thought the first half was superb. We got our goal and then, unfortunately, a mistake on the edge of the box (lead to their equaliser).

‘We were a little bit aggrieved at half-time. Coming in at 1-1, we felt we deserved a bit more than that.

‘But second half, with the slope, we knew they were going to be pending a little bit second half.

‘I thought we were the better side second half-wise and thoroughly deserved (the win).’

While Gosport were picking up their first win of the season at Frome, the Hawks fell to a 2-1 defeat at Plymouth Parkway - Borough’s FA Cup first qualifying opponents.

Striker Paul McCallum scored his first goal for Aaron Martin’s side, who now sit second from bottom of the Southern League Premier South table after four games.

Afterwards, Martin expressed frustration with what he saw from his team.

‘We're going through one of those spells. It's early on in the season where moments just aren't quite coming off for us.

‘We had a very good amount of chances, especially in the second half, to get ourselves back in the game and go and win the game.

‘(But) we just couldn't get the ball in the back of the net.

‘Performance-wise, the performance was good.

‘I think the officiating was poor at times. I think he (the referee) has let a lot go which he shouldn't have.

‘But, again, we still have to deal with it. We still have to deal with those moments and we just didn't.’

The Hawks have been drawn against Chippneham Town (away) in the first qualifying round of the FA Cup.
