Newman, who hailed from Fareham and attended St John's College, played for the Blues between 1955-1961.

The outside-left was signed from non-league Woking by manager Eddie Lever, making 118 appearances and scoring 25 goals.

He was sold to Leyton Orient for £100,000 in January 1961 before having stints at Crystal Palace and Gillingham.

Newman then moved to America to represent Atlanta Chiefs and Dallas Tornado, serving as a player-manager at the latter for a period before retiring from football in 1975.

He went on to manage Los Angeles Skyhawks, Fort Lauderdale Strikers, Miami Americans, San Diego Sockers, Arizona Sandsharks and Kansas City Wizards.

Newman was inducted to the National Soccer Hall of Fame in 1992.
