Royal Navy apprenticeships are a great opportunity – here’s what parents need to know, and how to apply

Your child hits 16 but the parenting worry doesn’t stop. Where is life going to take them, and what are the options?

Apprentices are being recruited right now and that could be the perfect opportunity for your son or daughter.

The Royal Navy is the headline sponsor of The News and Observer Series Apprenticeship Awards 2024. A spokesperson said: “The Royal Navy is proud to support these awards to help highlight and celebrate the hard work, dedication and commitment to Apprenticeships from both individuals and organisations across Portsmouth, Chichester and their surrounding areas.”

The Royal Navy is also a Top 100 Apprenticeship Employer and with a fantastic array of opportunities and excellent, well above average, rates of pay apprentices can be certain they are dealing with a brilliant organisation to start and build a successful career.

Young people benefit from an ethos of good mentoring and training and the skills they learn help them in the navy as well as civilian life.

There really is a role for everyone, from ratings – the core of the navy – to highly qualified air, submarine and weapons engineers.

The Royal Navy prides itself on only recruiting the best to serve the country and they are looking for applicants showing big potential, a desire to learn and a spirit of adventure.

AB Priya Bhullar a Warfare Specialist Apprentice said basic training was hard but she received excellent support. She added: “I got given all the knowledge I needed in order to get where I needed to be after the ten weeks. I never thought I would be able to achieve half the stuff that I had done.”

What are the rewards?

Rates of pay are very good with a starting salary in the region of £20,000 which rises quickly. A good holiday package also gives the Navy the advantage over apprenticeships in other walks of life.

And, of course, the Royal Navy offers the chance to have some great experiences. As well as travel, there is training on offer in activities such as skydiving, scuba diving, mountaineering and skiing.

There are fast tracked and intermediate places, lasting 12-18 months, and the Royal Navy has one of the highest completion rates of apprenticeships in the country. The scheme is also rated as by Ofsted as ‘outstanding’.
