Finding employers the right match when all they want for Christmas is a bright, keen graduate!

In this December edition of Business Talk Jane Howe, Student and Graduate Opportunities Manager at the University of Portsmouth, highlights the benefits of partnering with the university’s Graduate Recruitment Team to hire new talent.

When graduates leave the University of Portsmouth, they are seeking graduate level roles and very often, opportunities in and around the city they chose to study in.

Employers want to hire the best candidate for the role, who fits in well with their team. Recruitment should be robust, efficient and transparent; it understandably takes time and can be costly.

So, 17 years ago, the university decided to establish its own Graduate Recruitment Team, run by university staff, to support this process and introduce graduates to local businesses and not-for-profit organisations.

The team not only builds upon partnerships the university already has with many regional employers but also develops new partnerships with those who value a managed recruitment service, providing well-matched CVs rather than large quantities that take time to sift through.

The consultants, despite all being from commercial recruitment backgrounds, are not paid commission. Instead, their aim is to get to know our graduates and ensure they are placed in graduate-level roles with supportive employers.

How does the team support graduates?

When you invest in a University of Portsmouth graduate via the Graduate Recruitment Team, you are investing in an individual who the team has matched to your requirements and who they feel would add value to your organisation.

They understand how competitive the graduate job market is, so they help ensure candidates take time to research your company, values and expectations for the role, and explain the interview process.

Many of our graduates have undertaken placement years, worked whilst studying, volunteered and/or joined a student society while at university, so they will have plenty to talk about at your interview.

How does it work?

Working with final-year students and graduates of up to five years, the team promotes your vacancy and organisation to relevant candidates, arranges interviews and shares feedback, plus helps with salary negotiations if needed. The team provides an excellent means of tapping into graduate talent all year round and many organisations come back year after year to partner with them.

Don’t just take our word for it

Working with the Graduate Recruitment Consultancy was a fantastic experience. They understood our requirements perfectly and provided an excellent shortlist of candidates, making the final decision a real challenge. We were delighted to hire Holly, who has quickly become an integral part of our team. We’ve already enrolled her on a CIPD Level 7 apprenticeship to support her continued growth and development within the firm.
