Fresh Images Reveal Stunning conversion of St James Hospital by PJ Livesey Group

PJ Livesey Group has unveiled new images of its ambitious conversion of St James Hospital in Southsea, offering a first look at the beautiful heritage homes being crafted within this historic site.
The new CGIs showcase tall ceilings that open to unique mezzanine floors, highlighting the sensitive refurbishment of the building’s external façades to retain its innate charm and character.
Each home within this Grade II listed property is designed with respect for the hospital’s storied past, and most include private outdoor spaces and parking set amid mature trees and expansive gardens.
The development will also offer residents an array of premium amenities that embody the principles of space to breathe, time to relax, and room to grow.

The main building will feature a welcoming residents’ lounge, dedicated workspaces, and other shared facilities, creating an inviting environment that balances both relaxation and productivity. Residents will enjoy access to thoughtfully designed communal areas, ample off-street parking, and scenic outdoor spaces ideal for gathering, unwinding, or simply appreciating the historic setting.
Originally built in the 1870s by renowned Victorian architect George Rake, St James Hospital opened as an asylum in 1879, later expanding to treat infectious diseases in the 1880s. During the First World War, it served as a military hospital, before becoming a general hospital under the NHS until its closure in 2018.
The development will be known as St James Park, and will include 151 heritage properties within the main building and, to the rear, a carefully crafted collection of 58 newly built eco-friendly homes, all designed to meet the highest energy efficiency standards.

These new homes will feature advanced insulation, solar panels, EV charging points, and triple glazing, all thoughtfully integrated into the landscape to blend with the historic architecture.
