Earn, Learn, Lead: Degree apprenticeship opportunities at the University of Portsmouth

“I’m fortunate to have benefited from a number of Apprentices working in my team,” says Becky Miles (Research and Innovation Digital Communications Manager at the University of Portsmouth).
“And am delighted to see that the University continues to strengthen its commitment to career focused education with a renewed push to grow its Degree Apprenticeship provision - offering local employers and students new routes into high demand careers while earning a salary.
Building on the success of our work based learning model, this month we’re shining a spotlight on a trio of our flagship programmes: the Chartered Management Degree Apprenticeship, Digital Marketing Degree Apprenticeship and Project Management Degree Apprenticeship. Each designed to meet evolving industry needs across the South coast and beyond”.
Digital Marketing: Meeting the skills gap
Our BA (Hons) Digital Marketing Degree Apprenticeship is designed to tackle the growing digital skills gap facing businesses.
With demands for expertise in analytics, social media and digital strategy continuing to rise, the course blends academic theory with real workplace challenges. Apprentices will apply their learning directly to their employer’s business, gaining hands-on experience in areas such as content creation, user experience and search marketing.
This programme is accredited by leading industry bodies including the Chartered Institute of Marketing, which ensures that graduates leave not only with a degree but also with additional professional recognition.
Project Management: Driving delivery and innovation
The University is also encouraging applications to its BSc (Hons) Project Management Degree Apprenticeship aimed at those looking to lead complex projects across sectors such as construction, engineering and business services.
This course combines workplace experience with technical training in budgeting, operations, risk and quality management. Apprentices will graduate with both a degree and the APM Project Management Qualification which is an industry recognised credential that enhances employability. The University representatives highlight the programme's practical focus with students applying their learning immediately in real world environments.

A flagship route into leadership: Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship
The University of Portsmouth is urging prospective apprentices and employers to act quickly as this is the final opportunity to enrol on the Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship. Developed in partnership with employers and the Chartered Management Institute (CMI), the course responds to a recognised national shortage of skilled managers.
Learners will gain practical leadership skills and experience while working full time, developing expertise in areas such as strategy, team management and business operations. Crucially, graduates will achieve a Chartered Manager status as part of the programme placing them among the UK’s most professionally recognised leaders without additional assessments.
Due to funding changes the University has confirmed that upcoming August intake will be the final chance to join the programme for the 2026 cohort. However, the University continues to evolve its offering to meet the changing workforce needs, making sure to keep a close eye on upcoming announcements for 2027.
Call to action for employers and students
With applications open for upcoming intakes, we are urging local employers to collaborate and invest in talent through its apprenticeship schemes. At the same time, prospective students are being encouraged to consider degree apprenticeships as a viable alternative to traditional university routes.
As industries continue to evolve, our expanding portfolio of Degree Apprenticeships aims to equip the next generation with the skills, experience and qualifications needed to succeed in a fast-changing economy.
