Six months later, Mr Dobbs was fighting for his life after being struck down by leukaemia and was forced to undergo radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

It was almost 15 years to the day since he also had his bone marrow transplant and Mr Dobbs was ready to handover £7,000 to charity after trekking through the French Alps.

Chris, from Rowlands Castle, described his love for '˜the views, the quiet, the calm' of the Alps.

He said: '˜I wanted to do it to show that people can make full recoveries from leukaemia and go on to lead  normal lives.'
