The wire-free Tapo TC82 offers 2K recording, colour night vision and local microSD storage without a compulsory cloud subscription

A wire-free outdoor security camera with 2K video, colour night vision and subscription-free recording has been reduced to less than £40 at Amazon.

The Tapo TC82 battery security camera is currently £39.97 in a limited-time deal, half its £79.99 RRP. Amazon has given it an Amazon’s Choice label, while more than 2,000 have been bought through the retailer in the past month.

Customer feedback is based on a substantial number of owners. The half-price Tapo camera holds an average rating of 4.2 out of five stars from almost 5,000 reviews.

As it runs from a rechargeable battery, the TC82 does not need a power cable running through an outside wall. That could make it easier to monitor a front door, driveway, garage or garden where an outdoor socket is unavailable.

Tapo claims the battery can last for up to 180 days from a full charge. That figure comes from the company’s laboratory testing and real-world endurance will vary according to the number of activations, recording length, live viewing, temperature and chosen settings.

The wire-free outdoor camera is also compatible with Tapo’s solar panel for continuous daytime charging. The panel is not included with this £39.97 version, so anyone wanting that setup will need to budget for it separately.

Video is captured at 2K 3MP resolution, providing more detail than a standard 1080p camera. Built-in spotlights enable colour night vision at distances of up to 30ft, according to Tapo, which could make clothing, vehicles and other details easier to distinguish after dark.

AI-powered detection can identify people and send a notification to the owner’s phone. The Tapo TC82 outdoor camera also offers adjustable motion detection, sound and light alarms, and two-way audio for speaking to callers or warning someone away.

One of the biggest attractions is the choice of local recording. Footage can be saved to a microSD card with a capacity of up to 512GB, allowing the Tapo security camera to be used without an ongoing monthly storage fee.

A memory card is not listed among the supplied items and may need to be purchased separately. Tapo Care cloud storage is available as an optional subscription, with a 30-day trial offered to new customers.

Alexa compatibility means owners with a supported Echo Show or another screen-equipped Alexa device can ask to view the live camera feed. The Alexa display is a separate purchase and is not part of the £39.97 offer.

An IP65 weather-resistance rating helps protect the outdoor CCTV camera against dust and water. Tapo lists an operating range of roughly -20C to 45C, covering the temperatures it is likely to encounter through most British seasons.

There is an important limitation to understand before buying. The battery-powered TC82 does not support continuous recording and only saves clips when motion is detected. Anyone requiring uninterrupted, round-the-clock footage should look for a permanently powered camera designed for continuous capture.

Other versions appear on the same Amazon page, including a two-camera pack at £78.77 and higher-resolution 4MP and 4K models. Buyers interested in the £39.97 Tapo camera deal should make sure the single “2K 3MP” option is selected.

Tapo provides a two-year warranty and advertises 24-hour service assistance. The current price, selected model and estimated delivery date should still be checked before ordering.
